چکیده

Matveev and Larkin calculated the parity effect on the ground state energy of a small superconducting particle in the regimes where the mean level spacing δ is either large or small compared to the bulk gap ∆. We perform a numerical calculation which extends their results to intermediate values of δ/∆.

Parity Effect in a mesoscopic superconducting ring

– We study a mesoscopic superconducting ring threaded by a magnetic flux when the single particle level spacing is not negligible. It is shown that, for a superconducting ring with even parity, the behavior of persistent current is equivalent to what is expected in a bulk superconducting ring. On the other hand, we find that a ring with odd parity shows anomalous behavior such as fluxoid quanti...

Superconducting parity effect across the Anderson limit

How small can superconductors be? For isolated nanoparticles subject to quantum size effects, P.W. Anderson in 1959 conjectured that superconductivity could only exist when the electronic level spacing δ is smaller than the superconducting gap energy Δ. Here we report a scanning tunnelling spectroscopy study of superconducting lead (Pb) nanocrystals grown on the (110) surface of InAs. We find t...

Parity Effect in Mesoscopic and Nanoscopic Superconducting Particles

Superconductivity in small metallic specimens is studied with regard to the size dependence of the parity gap (∆P ), a parameter distinguishing between the energy of even and odd number of electrons in the granule. ∆P is shown to be an increasing function of level spacing δ. The energy gap of superconductor ∆, on the other hand, decreases with increasing δ and vanishes at δ = δc which is of the...

A small superconducting grain in the canonical ensemble

By means of the Lanczos method we analyze superconducting correlations in ultrasmall grains at fixed particle number. We compute the ground state properties and the excitation gap of the pairing Hamiltonian as a function of the level spacing δ. Both quantities turn out to be parity dependent and universal functions of the ratio δ/∆ (∆ is the BCS gap). We then characterize superconductivity in t...

Parity-dependent Kondo effect in ultrasmall metallic grains

– In this Letter we study the Kondo effect in an ultrasmall metallic grain, i.e. small enough to have a discrete energy-level spectrum, by calculating the susceptibility χ of the magnetic impurity. Our quantum Monte Carlo simulations, and analytic solution of a simple model, show that the behavior changes dramatically depending on whether the number of electrons in the grain is even or odd. We ...
